Wild in spirit.
“Earth is filled with heaven and every common bush aflame with God, but only those that see take off their sandals.” Elizabeth Barret Browning.
We are wild in spirit as is the whole of creation. We are born intrinsically wired to the wild landscape that we were formed from. We live and breathe and take our being from the Spirit that permeates all living things. We are wild at heart.
This connection to the wild within me flourished as a child growing up on 4500 acres of untamed, virgin, Australian bushland. My creativity was an extension and an expression of this wild place. I would paint on pieces of bark and sculpt emus and wildlife out of banksia flowers and form pottery pieces from the dam that had a clay bottom. I would walk through the bush barefoot and notice the wildflowers and the enormous sky that stretched out before me. I would dance in a thunderstorm with the lightening flashing around me, feeling enormous joy. It was elemental and when I felt most alive.
As an adult I still feel alive, powerful and free out in the elements and amongst the wild. I grieve for all that keeps us and creation, bound, tame and small. My art explores these internal and external contrasts through a spiritual and environmental lens.
The Wild is my teacher, my muse and my joy.

Testimonials.

This particular work(The coming) would not leave me alone, and so has come home to preside over my desk. It reminds me of the work of JMW Turner, with startling white blazing out of a dark stormy background. Like Turner, Catherine seems to be able to paint light. The light erupting out of darkness and chaos speaks to me of the assurance that Christ will come again – or to put it another way it will be all right in the end and if it’s not all right it’s not the end (John Lennon quoting Fernando Sabino) Hugh. “There’s a sense of moodiness and richness to Catherine’s work, and I’m a huge fan of it. The way she captures the texture of rocks and the general wildness of the NZ landscape is impressive. Here’s one of our purchases ‘Sublime Audacity’ taking pride of place in our living room. Thanks again Catherine. We couldn’t be more happy! Nicky. Wellington NZ”

I was very moved by Catherine’s “The Courtship” exhibition which depicts the journey of the soul. We spent a lot of time discussing the sequence of paintings and this one really spoke to me. For me it is an inspiration for the future and a reminder of the past. I am also inspired by Catherine’s courage and vulnerability.
This piece sits above my working space in my creating room and speaks to me of possibilities. Love it.
